“This is a nice surprise,” Ray Nassir said as he and Michel settled into their seats by a window looking out onto Dauphine Street.

A month before the hurricane, a new owner had taken over the venerated Quarter Scene Restaurant and reopened it as Eat. Michel had been meaning to try it since, but hadn’t had a chance. On the spur of the moment, he’d decided to call Nassir to see if he was free to meet for a late lunch.

“Sorry for the last minute,” he said. “Hopefully you weren’t too busy.”
